The British Ministry of Defence announced its joint operation with France on Saturday night. They targeted an underground facility in Syria. This facility is believed to be used by the Islamic State (IS) group for storing weapons.
According to their statement, Royal Air Force aircraft carried out successful strikes against Daesh. They did this alongside France. This refers to IS by its Arabic name.
They described the site as occupied by Daesh. It is likely used for storing weapons and explosives. They noted that there were no civilians living nearby.
The ministry emphasized that there was no evidence the airstrikes north of Palmyra endangered any civilians.
IS lost territorial control in Syria in 2019. However, the group continues to operate. They are especially active in the country’s expansive desert regions.
Palmyra, known for its UNESCO-listed ancient ruins, was previously under the control of jihadist fighters.
Last month, the US reported that a lone IS gunman attacked American personnel in Palmyra, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and one civilian.
In response, US forces struck multiple IS targets across Syria.
