Sweden nominates EU minister as its next European commissioner

Sweden wants Jessika Roswall to be the country’s next European commissioner, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced Monday.

Roswall, from Sweden’s governing Moderate Party, is no stranger to Brussels, having served in Kristersson’s Cabinet since 2022 as minister for EU affairs as well as minister for Nordic cooperation.

“She has long had a wide contact network within the EU and it has become much wider during her period as EU minister,” Kristersson said at a press conference.

Roswall did not say which portfolio she would prefer but mentioned “issues that are important for the EU and for Sweden, such as the war in Ukraine, competitiveness, the climate and crime.”

She will replace outgoing Swedish Commissioner Ylva Johansson, who holds the home affairs portfolio.

Ursula von der Leyen, who wants a second term as Commission president, faces a confirmation vote in the European Parliament potentially as early as next week. If she passes, the next stage is to match up countries and portfolios for her next team. Those commissioner picks are then grilled by MEPs who have the power to approve or reject the nominees.
