Switzerland’s Nemo wins Eurovision

Switzerland and its representative Nemo took the honours from the 25 songs selected for the final of this year’s edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.

This is the third victory for Switzerland, who previously won the very first edition back in 1956, and in 1988 with Celine Dion.

Croatia finished in second place with Rim Tim Tagi Dim by Baby Lasagna on 547 points. And Ukraine ended up in third place thanks to alyona alyona & Jerry Heil with their song Teresa & Maria on 453 points.

The final table saw the following outcome:

  1. Switzerland – 591 points
  2. Croatia – 547 points
  3. Ukraine – 453 points
  4. France – 445 points
  5. Israel – 375 points

The bottom 5 were Georgia, Spain, Slovenia, Austria and last place to Norway. (The UK was the only country to have received nul points from the audience.)

Born in 1999 in Biel, a small bilingual town in Switzerland, Nemo has been playing the violin, piano and drums since they were a small child.

In 2016, Nemo became famous overnight through an appearance at SRF Virus (#Cypher), which went viral on social media. Afterwards they released two EPs – through which 7 songs made it directly onto the official Swiss Singles Chart.

2020 marked the beginning of a period of change for Nemo, when they started writing and producing for other artists, and also started releasing songs in English.

In their music, Nemo deals with themes such as gender identity, mental health and finding one‘s place in this world.

Nemo is the first nonbinary artist to win Eurovision, and said that they feel proud not only for themselves, but the community of people who are nonbinary or gender fluid. They hope there will be more empathy and understanding of each other.
