Tensions in Movimento 5 Stelle after “I would not close ports” declaration by Roberto Fico

Tension in the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5s) was registered after the speaker of the Italian Chamber Roberto Fico (who hails from the same party), during a visit in Pozzallo said “I would not close the ports.”

During his visit, Fico said that “heart and head are both required in this issue. “As the third most important office of the state – he emphasized – “I say that we must show solidarity with those who emigrate, who have dramatic stories that touch the heart. It is up to Europe to take on this emergency, not just Italy, however there is no space for extremism because solidarity is done together.”

The position of Fico is very different than that of vice premier Matteo Salvini as he continues attacking the NGOs.

Luigi Di Maio said the government is compact on the immigration line. No one has ever closed the ports, but we have closed it for the NGOs that do not respect the rules. He added that the opinion of Fico is a statement by the President of the Chamber, and while they’re respected they are not the line of government.
