Tensions Rise as US Military Downs Iranian Drone in Arabian Sea

A US stealth warplane has shot down an Iranian drone that approached an American aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, according to a statement from the US military. The incident occurred on Tuesday as the carrier was operating in international waters.

Captain Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for US Central Command, confirmed that an F-35C fighter jet from the USS Abraham Lincoln engaged the drone in self-defence. The action was taken to protect both the aircraft carrier and its personnel, Hawkins said.

Despite the incident, diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran are set to continue. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that talks with Iran scheduled for later this week remain on the agenda. Leavitt made the comments during an interview on the ‘America Reports’ programme.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with US envoy Steve Witkoff in Jerusalem on Tuesday, ahead of the planned US-Iran talks. Netanyahu reiterated his government’s position that Iran “cannot be trusted,” referencing past actions and broken promises. A statement from the Prime Minister’s office emphasised Israel’s concerns about ongoing diplomatic engagement with Tehran.

The incident adds tension to an already volatile region, as the US, Israel, and Iran navigate complex security and diplomatic challenges in the Middle East.
