The quake struck an area off San Julian town in Eastern Samar province at 1:37 p.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

It said the quake was tectonic in origin – or there was a movement in the Earth’s crust – with a depth of 17 kilometers. According to Phivolcs, shaking is more felt when quakes have lower depth.

Intensity 5, classified by Phivolcs as “strong,” was felt in Tacloban City in Leyte and Catbalogan City in Samar province. Intensity 4 was recorded by instruments in the cities of Masbate, Legazpi and Sorsogon.

Aftershocks are expected.
