The Queen’s Speech

The very first line of the Queen’s Speech was: “My government’s priority has always been to secure the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union on Oct 31m adding “my government intends to work towards a new partnership with the EU, based on free trade and friendly cooperation.”

Queen Elizabeth’s speech from the throne, which indicates the way Boris Johnson’s government will be working focused on the future relation of the UK with the EU.  Specifically, she said that the Johnson’s government “will work to implement new regimes for fisheries, agriculture and trade, seizing the opportunities that arise from leaving the EU.”

The Queen announced that the government intends to support and strengthen the NHS and also enlisted proposals to reform adult social care in England. In her speech, the Queen also referred to new sentencing laws aimed to address a way how the most serious offenders spend longer in custody to reflect better the severity of their crimes.

Meanwhile she also spoke about the government’s plans for a crackdown on foreign offenders and serious violence while giving more powers for the police.

The Queen also said that the Government intends that for the first time, environmental principles will be enshrined in law.

She said “Measures will be introduced to improve air and water quality, tackles plastic pollution and restore habitats so plants and wildlife can thrive.”

She also said that the government will be at the forefront of efforts to solve the most complex international security issues. While championing global free trade and work alongside international partners to solve the most pressing global challenges, she emphasised that the British government will prioritise tackling climate change and ensuring that all girls have access to 12 years of quality education.

The speech was based on a 130 page document of the respective bills.

Sky’s Political Correspondent reviewed the 65th time Queen Elizabeth II speech. In fact this was the sixty fifth time she opened a new session of Parliament in the course of her reign.

Normally, each Queen’s Speech she’s delivered has, by definition, articulated the political interests of the governing party at the time. However this was different, in fact it was unlike any other.

While normally it is a given that the government will at least have a chance to introduce its programme, even if it faces a battle in the Commons once it does, this time the government’s ability to do even that remains very much in question – Boris Johnson’s premiership is in such a precarious position it could be toppled at any moment.

He adds that this was not so much an outline of a programme for this government, but he hopes will be the next. The speech was essentially a Conservative Party campaign slogan, fleshed out and wrapped in ermine.
