Updated: Thousands protest in Puerto Rico demanding governor’s resignation

UPDATE:

Police in San Juan fired tear gas on Monday night to disperse thousands of protestors demanding Puerto Rico’s governor resign over offensive chat messages, the latest scandal to hit a bankrupt island struggling to recover from 2017 hurricanes.

Police moved in at around 11 p.m. to break up protestors still on the streets of San Juan’s old city following day-long demonstrations by hundreds of thousands of residents, according to tweets and videos from the scene.

Earlier: Protesters in San Juan, Puerto Rico, blocked a major highway as part of their demonstrations demanding the resignation of Gov. Ricardo Rosselló.

Videos widely shared on social media show thousands of protesters massing on the highway as pressure continues mounting on Rosselló to resign.

Rosselló has refused to step down as governor, but on Sunday he announced he will not seek reelection in 2020. The governor also stepped down as head of his local party, the New Progressive Party.

But the governor’s effective retirement from electoral politics was not enough for protesters, who have taken to the streets for more than a week demanding his ouster.
