Three dead and 15 injured in Tenerife tidal surge

waves crashing on shore

Three people have died and 15 others were injured after huge waves struck the popular Spanish holiday island of Tenerife.

Emergency services said a woman died after being swept into the sea near the resort of Puerto de la Cruz, while a man lost his life in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A third victim was later found dead in the water near a beach in Granadilla.

Authorities have urged the public to stay away from coastal areas and to refrain from taking photos or videos of the rough seas as stormy weather persists.

Rescue services reported that a man airlifted from the water at La Guancha in northern Tenerife was later pronounced dead in hospital. Another man was discovered floating near El Cabezo beach in the south, but efforts to revive him failed.

At Puerto de la Cruz, one woman died of a heart attack while another ten people were pulled out to sea. Three of them were seriously injured and taken to hospital.
