Tories in Turmoil: Britain’s Once-Dominant Party Faces Existential Crisis

Once proud of being “the world’s most successful political party,” Britain’s Conservatives are now struggling for survival. After their crushing 2024 election defeat, the Tories have shifted sharply to the right under leader Kemi Badenoch, adopting Trump-style rhetoric and policies including mass deportations, steep spending cuts, and withdrawal from international human rights commitments.

At the party’s Manchester conference, thin crowds reflected the movement’s fading appeal as members wrestled with defections to Nigel Farage’s surging Reform UK, which now leads in national polls. “We have a mountain to climb,” Badenoch admitted, insisting her party remains “up for the fight.”

Years of internal chaos and broken promises have hollowed out the Conservatives’ once-formidable reputation for competence. Brexit’s economic gains have failed to materialize, while successive leaders — Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak — left the party mired in scandal and economic mismanagement. Badenoch’s turn toward hard-right populism is meant to recapture disillusioned voters but has unsettled moderates who see her agenda as abandoning traditional Conservative principles.

Critics, including think-tank experts and long-time members, warn that redefining the party as “Reform with better economics” risks alienating its broad base.

As Reform siphons voters from the right and Labour dominates the center, the Conservatives face a narrowing path back to power. Badenoch’s poor polling and uneven parliamentary performances have fueled speculation about her leadership’s longevity, while rivals like Robert Jenrick position themselves as potential successors.

Yet, amid nostalgia for Margaret Thatcher’s heyday — complete with Thatcher cutouts, whisky, and disco nights — some party veterans still hope history will repeat itself. “Thatcher was doubted too,” said MP David Davis. “Another crisis will come — and then, maybe, Badenoch will be the right answer.”
