Train service between Rome and Florence suspended due to fire

All train services between Rome and Florence in Italy were suspended due to a fire in the early hours of Monday.

An arson fire in a rail transformer room on the outskirts of Florence caused train chaos in Italy on the day. The fire at the high-speed transformer triggered long delays in both directions on the main north-south line.

Italian railway infrastucture manager (RFI) said the fire was started ‘by a deliberate act by person or persons unknown’. RFI added that some 25 high-speed trains had been cancelled, run by both Trenitalia and Italo.

It is not known what caused the fire, but initial indications are that it most probably was arson.

The incident is also affecting train services to other areas of Italy among them Milano and Bologna and Napoli
