US President Donald Trump announced plans to sign an executive order requiring voter ID for all voters. Posting on Truth Social, he said, “Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS!” He also sought to limit mail-in voting to the very ill and military personnel stationed far away.
The move comes amid Trump’s repeated, baseless claims that his 2020 loss was due to widespread fraud, including illegal voting by non-citizens. He has long advocated ending electronic voting machines in favor of paper ballots and hand counts, despite officials warning this method is slower, costlier, and less accurate.
Earlier this year, Trump signed a broad executive order mandating proof of citizenship for federal elections and requiring all ballots to be received by Election Day, but a judge blocked parts of it, ruling that regulating federal elections falls under Congress and states, not the president.
Trump now aims to end mail-in ballots and voting machines ahead of the 2026 midterms, the first nationwide test of his policies since returning to power in January. Democrats are preparing to challenge Republican control of Congress to counter his domestic agenda.
