Tsipras calls for snap election after European Parliament vote loss

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has said he will call for early elections after the second round of local and regional elections.

Speaking outside SYRIZA party headquarters in Athens in the wake of his party’s defeat in European Parliament elections, Tsipras said the polls were a vote of confidence in the government’s policy. “The outcome was not up to our expectations,” he said.

The likely date for early elections is Sunday, June 30.

Earlier Opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis has demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and early elections in the wake of what appears to be a resounding defeat for the governing leftists on Sunday night.
