UPDATED: Tsunami warning issued after 6.8 magnitude earthquake off Indonesian coast

Indonesia’s geophysics agency said a tsunami is “possible” following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake.

The quake hit off the coast, east of Sulawesi island.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake hit at a depth of 17km.

Indonesia’s geophysics agency sai it is clear that the quake has tsunami potential, and residents are advised to evacuate as soon possible.

The agency is monitoring for high waves as the quake had the potential to trigger a tsunami, it added.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which hit 280 km south of the province of Gorontalo at a depth of 43 km, the agency added.
