Tunisian Health Minister resigns over deaths of 11 newborn babies

Abderraouf Cherif, the Tunisian Health Minister, has resigned following the deaths of 11 newborn babies at a state-run hospital in the Tunisian capital, Tunis. Cherif was appointed Minister only four months ago.

Officials said the deaths occurred between the 7 and 8 March and evidence indicates that they had all died from septic shock.

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed said investigations have been launched into the state-run facility.

In a Facebook post, Tunisia’s pediatrics society said the infection may have been caused by an intravenous product and criticised the precarious conditions in which health professionals work in Tunisia.

The system has been hampered by management and financial problems, along with recurrent drug shortages.
