Turkey begins deportation of IS militants

Turkey has begun deporting captured Islamic State (IS) militants, with 11 French jihadists expected to be sent home in the coming days, Euronews reports.

In comments carried on Monday by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, interior ministry spokesperson Ismail Catakli said an American foreign fighter was deported on Monday and seven German nationals would be returned on November 14.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu had said last week Turkey would begin to send foreign Islamic State militants back to their home countries starting on Monday, even if the nations the fighters came from had revoked their citizenship, Reuters reports.

As many as 2,500 militants could be sent back by Turkey, with the majority going to European Union nations, state broadcaster TRT Haber said, adding there were currently 813 jihadists at 12 deportation centres in the country.

There was no immediate comment by the US or Germany.
