Turkey to track mobiles to ensure Covid-positive persons stay home

As the infection and death rate continue to increase at alarming rate in Turkey, the Government of the South Eastern European nation has given itself ample powers in its bid to fight off the epidemic.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the authorities will be tracking the mobile phones of those persons testing positive to the virus to ensure that they respect their quarantine orders. Erdogan’s office pointed out at a legal provision which allows Government to access and process personal data without consent for in exceptional circumstances.

People caught outside of their residences will be contacted immediately and ordered back home. While the Turkish Government has so far not imposed a total lockdown, curfews have been implemented for the elderly, while bars and restaurants have been shut down.
