The U.S. Department of State has elevated its travel advisory for Italy to Level 2, urging American travelers to “exercise increased caution” due to potential terrorist threats. This adjustment, issued on May 23, 2025, marks a shift from the previous Level 1 status, which recommended standard precautions.
The advisory highlights the risk of terrorist violence, including attacks that may occur with little or no warning. Potential targets include tourist attractions, transportation hubs, shopping centers, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, religious sites, parks, cultural events, schools, airports, and other public areas.
Travelers are advised to remain vigilant in tourist areas, monitor local media for updates, and be prepared to adjust their plans as necessary. Enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is recommended to receive real-time alerts from the U.S. Embassy. Additionally, travelers should prepare contingency plans for emergency situations.
This update aligns Italy’s advisory level with other European nations such as France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, which also hold Level 2 advisories. The State Department’s travel advisory system ranges from Level 1 (“Exercise Normal Precautions”) to Level 4 (“Do Not Travel”).
