U.S. prepares for second Trump – Kim summit

President Donald Trump is preparing to hold a second summit with Kim Jong Un, following a request from the North Korean dictator for another encounter in the wake of their historic June meeting in Singapore. The White House said it had started planning for a second summit between the leaders after Mr Trump received a “very warm, positive letter” from Mr Kim.

“The primary purpose of the letter was to request and look to schedule another meeting with the president, which we are open to and are already in the process of co-ordinating,” said Sarah Sanders, White House press secretary.

The decision to start preparing for what would be only the second meeting between leaders of the US and North Korea came just weeks after Mr Trump told Mike Pompeo, secretary of state, to cancel a visit to Pyongyang because North Korea had not done enough to demonstrate its commitment to denuclearisation. Ms Sanders rejected suggestions that the US and North Korea had made no progress towards the goal outlined in Singapore — an agreement that was criticised by many experts as being vague.

She cited the recent military parade in Pyongyang where the regime did not display intercontinental ballistic missiles as one example of North Korea demonstrating sincerity in wanting to improve relations.
