European football’s governing body, plans to send two of the sport’s most powerful executives to defend the continent’s place as the pinnacle of club football amid a proposed transformation of the global game.
Fifa, the sport’s world governing body, has been in talks with a SoftBank-led consortium of international investors that have pledged $25bn to expand the Club World Cup, an annual competition between seven of the top teams, as well as to create a new league tournament for national sides. It has twice been forced to delay a vote on the proposals, which have divided the sport.
Fifa last week announced the creation of a “ task force” led by its president Gianni Infantino to explore the feasibility of the tournaments and has asked regional confederation presidents to suggest representatives. Uefa plans to propose Andrea Agnelli and Richard Scudamore, according to multiple people familiar with the decision.
