UEFA’s plans for changes in Champions League criticised

Uefa, European football’s governing body, has come under fire over a proposal to change the structure of the Champions League that would ensure the richest clubs are likelier to play each season in one of the sport’s most valuable and prestigious tournaments.

Over several months, Uefa has held talks with the European Club Association, a body that represents the interests of more than 200 teams across the continent, about making changes to its European competitions from 2024.

This season, just over €2.04bn will be distributed to the 32 clubs playing in the Champions League.

Although other less radical changes are also being debated by Uefa and the ECA, the leaked proposal is the most clearly developed plan to be presented yet.  It could mean that top clubs could entrench their financial power by consistently playing in the Champions League each year, while making it harder for smaller clubs to reach the top competition.
