UK Labour veteran tells MPs removing Starmer would be a bad idea

Veteran Labour minister Jacqui Smith backed Keir Starmer on Monday, warning MPs and Cabinet colleagues against plotting to remove him as prime minister.

Smith, who served under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, called the resignation of Starmer’s chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, “a good idea” but stressed that Starmer must remain in No. 10. She said the government should avoid infighting, a mistake she said had plagued previous administrations.

Speaking to Times Radio and later Sky News, Smith urged ministers and their advisers to focus on delivering change for the country, rather than on potential leadership challenges, as Starmer continues to recover from a rocky start and controversial appointments.
