UK ‘Not Ready’ for 2C of Global Warming by 2050, Climate Advisers Warn

The UK must prepare for more extreme weather as global temperatures are expected to rise by at least 2°C by 2050, the government’s independent Climate Change Committee (CCC) has warned.

In a letter to ministers, the CCC said Britain is “not yet adapted” to the worsening weather already being experienced, “let alone” what is expected in coming decades. The committee urged the government to set a long-term adaptation framework with clear objectives, five-year targets, and departmental accountability.

The CCC said it would issue detailed advice on potential trade-offs in a major adaptation report due in May 2026. Its previous report, released in April, warned that preparations for rising temperatures had “stalled or were moving in the wrong direction.”

While the Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C, the CCC said the UK must now plan for at least 2°C of warming — a scenario that would bring far more frequent and intense weather extremes.
