Ukraine collects vast war data trove to train AI models

As warfare increasingly incorporates artificial intelligence, Ukraine has a significant advantage: millions of hours of drone footage, which can be leveraged to train AI models for battlefield decision-making. Both Ukraine and Russia have already integrated AI into their military strategies, using systems that can identify targets and process images more quickly than human operators.

Oleksandr Dmitriev, founder of OCHI—a non-profit Ukrainian digital platform that centralizes video feeds from over 15,000 drone crews—explained that his system has accumulated 2 million hours (or 228 years) of drone-captured battlefield footage since 2022.

“This is food for the AI. To teach AI, you provide it with 2 million hours of video. It becomes something extraordinary,” Dmitriev said.

This extensive data offers unparalleled opportunities to train AI models in combat tactics, target identification, and weapon system effectiveness. “It’s essentially experience that can be transformed into mathematics,” Dmitriev added, highlighting how AI can analyze weapon trajectories and angles for optimal impact.
