Ukraine launches mass drone attack on Russia, loses more ground in east

Kyiv launched one of its largest drone attacks on Russia since the start of the full-scale war, targeting power plants and an oil refinery overnight. Meanwhile, Russian forces continued their advance towards a strategic town in eastern Ukraine, officials reported on Sunday.

Russian missile strikes on Kharkiv injured over 40 people, including five children, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to renew his calls for allies to allow Kyiv to use Western-supplied missiles to strike deeper into enemy territory and mitigate the threat of future attacks.

This fighting comes at a crucial moment in the two-and-a-half-year conflict, as Russia intensifies its offensive in eastern Ukraine while also trying to repel Ukrainian forces that breached its western border in a surprise attack on August 6.

Last week, Russia launched its most intense air strikes of the war, targeting energy facilities as part of a sustained campaign of drone and missile attacks that have resulted in thousands of civilian and military casualties since the conflict began in February 2022.
