Ukraine, Russia exchange prisoners

A major prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine took place on Saturday after lengthy negotiations between the two countries.

Planes carrying the prisoners landed at almost the same time at Vnukovo airport in Moscow and at Kyiv’s Boryspil airport, POLITICO reports.

Those released by Russia include all 24 Ukrainian sailors who were detained by Russia in November in the Sea of Azov, as well as Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who was convicted of plotting “terrorist” acts, Al Jazeera reports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the exchange as the first step towards ending the war in Ukraine’s east and returning territory annexed by Moscow.
