Ukraine video claims to show long-range attack on oil tanker in Mediterranean

Ukraine says it has carried out a long-range drone strike on a Russian “shadow fleet” tanker in the Mediterranean.

The Oman-flagged Qendil was reportedly targeted in neutral waters, with multiple explosions visible in footage provided by Ukraine’s security service (SBU). Officials described the operation as the SBU’s first strike in such waters.

BBC Verify, which assessed the video, confirmed that the ship’s shape matches publicly available images of the Qendil and verified the footage as recent. Location data placed the tanker 96 nautical miles south-west of Crete, having entered the Mediterranean from the Suez Canal on 16 December.

Maritime risk company Vanguard Tech noted the vessel made a U-turn near Crete, although any link to the reported strike remains.
