UN Security Council extends Operation Sophia for another year

The UN Security Council unanimously decided to extend the task of the Operation Sophia, off the Libyan coast, for another year.

The resolution adopted under Chapter VII has condemned all forms of human trafficking.

It also stipulates that further measures should be taken to ensure the successful implementation of the resolution’s recommendations.

Resolution No. 242, allows vessels of member states and regional organizations to inspect ships off the Libyan coast, suspected of involvement in illegal activities, for a further year, starting from last Thursday.

The resolution drafted by Britain says that “the smuggling activities undermine the stability of Libya and puts the lives of hundreds of thousands of people at risk”.

Several countries involved in Operation Sophia have halted monitoring and inspection patrols, because of a dispute over the migrant-landing points.

Last week, the EU extended Operation Sophia´s mandate until March 31, still using only planes.
