US-Iran Hostilities Intensify After Helicopter Incident Sparks Retaliatory Strikes

The United States launched military strikes against Iran on Tuesday after President Donald Trump said Tehran was responsible for the downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, marking a sharp escalation in the conflict and threatening efforts to sustain a fragile ceasefire.

The U.S. military’s Central Command said it carried out what it described as “self-defense” strikes against Iranian targets following the helicopter incident. Trump had vowed a response after the aircraft was brought down while operating near the strategic waterway. The helicopter’s crew was rescued and reported safe.

Iranian state media reported explosions on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and in the southern port city of Sirik following the U.S. operation. Iranian officials vowed retaliation, raising fears of a broader regional confrontation.

Hours later, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched missile and drone attacks against U.S. military facilities in Jordan and other targets across the Gulf, including sites in Kuwait and Bahrain, according to Iranian and U.S. accounts. Most incoming projectiles were intercepted, and no casualties or major damage were immediately reported. Jordan said it intercepted several missiles over its territory.

The latest exchange has deepened concerns over the stability of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Analysts warned that continued military action could jeopardize diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the months-long conflict.

Financial markets reacted cautiously. Oil prices climbed as investors weighed the risk of disruptions to global crude supplies, with Brent crude trading above $92 per barrel and U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate approaching $89.

Despite the escalation, some analysts said the latest strikes did not necessarily signal an immediate slide into a wider war, although tensions between Washington and Tehran remain at one of their highest levels in recent months.
