US launches blockade on Iran as Trump bets economic pressure will force surrender

The United States has begun a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports, marking a sharp escalation in tensions following failed weekend peace talks in Pakistan. The move, ordered by President Donald Trump, began on Mondayand is being framed by Washington as a strategy to apply economic pressure rather than sustained military escalation.

Trump has argued that economic pain could succeed where weeks of air strikes have not, forcing Tehran to back down and accept US demands. However, analysts caution that this approach may underestimate Iran’s ability to endure hardship and adapt under sanctions and maritime restrictions.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has vowed retaliation, warning that the blockade could have global economic consequences, including higher energy prices affecting international markets and US consumers.

Experts note that Iran is unlikely to remain passive. Hasan Alhasan, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Bahrain, said Tehran has multiple ways to offset the impact of the blockade, though their effectiveness remains uncertain. These include rerouting energy exports through alternative corridors such as pipelines to Iraq, Turkey and Armenia, as well as shipments via the Caspian Sea’s Neka terminal.

Iran could also expand fuel smuggling across its long land borders or reintroduce blending tactics with Iraqi crude to disguise exports, strategies it has reportedly used in the past.

Beyond economic countermeasures, Iran may respond militarily. Analysts warn of potential strikes on US naval assets or efforts to disrupt global shipping through allies such as the Houthis in Yemen, who could target the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime chokepoint.

As tensions rise, Trump has escalated his rhetoric further, warning that Iranian vessels approaching the blockade zone would be “immediately eliminated” using tactics previously employed against suspected drug trafficking boats.

The blockade marks a new phase in the confrontation, with both sides signalling readiness to escalate further, raising fears of wider regional instability and disruption to global trade routes.
