Politico reported that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán labelled those in the European People’s Party (EPP) critical of his party, “useful idiots”.
Orbán was quoted by Politico as saying this in an exclusive interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag . In it he said that their efforts would only serve the interests of the left and the power interests of our opponents.
The interview is being considered by some as an attempt by Orbán to fend off recent criticism.
Several parties within the EPP, the center-right group in the European Parliament to which his Fidesz party belongs, in the past days called for the Hungarian party’s suspension or expulsion amid concern over its increasingly anti-Semitic and anti-EU rhetoric.
The criticism was also spurned by a poster campaign by Fidesz anti-Semitic undertones featuring financier George Soros and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
In the Welt interview, Orbán said the party was planning a new poster campaign featuring Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans, who is campaigning as the lead candidate of Europe’s Socialists.
