A warplane belonging to the forces of Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar made an emergency landing in neighboring Tunisia on Monday, an allied administration based in eastern Libya said.
A Libyan L39 warplane landed in Bani Ghazal in southern Mednine in Tunisia and according to the Tunisian Defense Ministry, the pilot said he had a technical malfunction that led him to make an emergency landing.
The aircraft was on a “reconnaissance and patrol mission and suffered a technical problem resulting in an emergency landing” in southern Tunisia, a statement said
According to a source from the ministry, meetings for the Libyan Chargé d’affaires in Tunis with Tunisian Foreign and Defense Ministries about the issue are about to take place.
A source from the Libyan embassy in Tunis said they had formed a commission in Sfax to stay in contact with Tunisian authorities about the warplane.
Meanwhile, a Libyan military source has confirmed that the L39 was for Khalifa Haftar’s Air Force and it had taken off from Brak Al-Shatti airbase, adding that the GPS device was damaged and the pilot lost destination so he had to land in Tunisia after the aircraft’s fuel ran out.
