When Covid becomes personal – Roberto Mancini, CT Italia

Roberto Mancini, head coach of the Italian national football team has described as “hell on Earth” the scenes of soldiers carrying away a number of coffins out of the city of Bergamo. While the death toll in Italy continues to rise and has neared 5,500, the reality of coronavirus hit home for Mancini in the past few days as a childhood friend of his passed away.

The name was not disclosed to the media but it is understood that his friend, who is older than him, worked for a charity in Jesi. The locality of his friend’s workplace is even more significant considering that Mancini’s parents still live in this locality in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region.

Despite what he describes as a “punch in the face” Mancini insisted that he still feels safe in his country. Mancini confirmed with Italian journalists that he was currently confined in his house in Rome together with two of his children.

The Italian coach expressed his hope that Italy and the rest of the world can get out of this situation as soon as possible. At the same time, he expressed his appreciation for the way his nation got together and citizens are showing solidarity with each other in this difficult time.
