Between 2011 and 2017 there have been at least 259 ‘selfie deaths’, that is people who lost their lives by accident while trying to take a selfie.

These numbers came from a study published by the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

The average age of the victims, almost three quarters of which were males, was 22.9 years.

The highest number of deaths has been reported by India, which has almost half of the incidents, followed by Russia, the US and Pakistan.

Most people, 70, died of drowning, while the second most frequent cause was an accident with a means of transport, mostly due to people taking selfies near trains.

Other reported causes of death include falls, fires, electric shocks and even in eight cases, animals.
