325 new deaths recorded in Belgium

Belgium has recorded another 325 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number to 3,019. This figure includes 171 deaths in care homes in Flanders in March which have only just been added to the tally.

Nursing home residents so far account for nearly half of Belgium’s total coronavirus deaths, according to health authorities’ latest situation report.

3,679 tests have been carried out in the last 24 hours, out of which 1,689 were positive. Infections are still largely concentrated in the Flanders region, which saw a 915 rise in cases today, compared to 570 in Wallonia and 178 in Brussels.

Currently, 5,610 patients are being treated for coronavirus in hospital — 20 more than yesterday. Of these, 1,268 are in intensive care. Hospitals appear to be coping well with the crisis so far, with just 58 percent of beds occupied. However, there is still little sign of Belgium reaching its peak number of cases.
