873 deaths registered in UK in past 24 hours

UK hospitals have counted another 873 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the British tally to 17,408. As typically happens on Tuesdays, the number almost doubles the previous day’s increase, due to reported delays in registering deaths over the weekend.

Once again, England had by far the largest share of deaths, with 778 people passing away. Scotland reported 70 deaths, while 25 were recorded in Wales.

Earlier today, the ONS published data showing that the number of deaths is far higher, since government data excluded deaths in nursing homes and other institutions. The ONS also said that over 30% of deaths in the UK are linked to coronavirus. This figure goes to over 50% in London and to 37% in the West Midlands.

If the UK’s figures are underestimating the death toll by the percentage estimated by the Statistics body, the total death toll for the country could exceed 23,000, pushing it as the second worst hit in Europe after Italy. The new data released by the ONS sparked significant debate which is expected to continue in the House of Commons, which resumed its sittings yesterday, allowing a maximum of 50 Members of Parliament to attend.
