European school in Brussels closed over coronavirus fears

The European School of Brussels III will be closed on Monday and Tuesday after a parent tested positive for the coronavirus, Belgian media reported Sunday.

“As some test results are still being processed, we believe it would be prudent to close the school from Monday, March 9, to Tuesday, March 10,” the school said in a note to parents quoted by Le Soir. “It will be a preventive measure pending the results of the tests.”

The paper reports that the parent had now quarantined, as had her children, who attended the school last Monday. The school is one of four such international institutions for EU officials’ children in Brussels.

The government has announced 422 samples were tested yesterday for the coronavirus, 31 of which tested positive, bringing the total number of infections so far to exactly 200.

The positive tests were divided among the regions: 16 in Flanders, eight in Brussels and seven in Wallonia.
