Italy has registered 3,786 new cases of the novel coronavirus while 525 more have perished during the past 24 hours, according to the latest data published by the Civil Protection. The latter total has increased to 22,170. In all, 168,941 have now contracted the virus, while 40,164 have since recovered. This represented an increase of more than 2,000 when compared to Wednesday.
Prof Silvio Brusaferro, President of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità described these numbers as a “confirmation that we are witnessing a downward trend in all key indicators – whether those related to infections, the amount of hospitalised persons and number of deaths”.
Earlier today, in a separate statement, a nursing association announced that 8,600 members of their profession have contracted the virus with 31 of them losing their lives.
Regions are taking different approaches to easing of restrictions. Alberto Cirio, President of the Piedmont region said that “we need to restart our lives, but this has to happen in a secure manner. We have to learn to live with the virus and implement the necessary measures to contain it”. Piedmont announced that the region will be testing the easing of restrictions with a number of businesses, taking in consideration of the reality of the territory.
On the other hand, Veneto President Luca Zaia took a more open approach, expressing his conviction that “by the 4th of May or even before we can open everything”. However, he did add that for this to happen certain rules and regulations will have to be observed.
