News in Malta this evening is overshadowed by a tragic accident at a construction site that claimed the life of a 26-year-old man.
TVM reports that the Libyan national was doing plastering work in Qui Si Sana seven stories above the street when one of the two ropes holding the plank came loose. One News says that the man held on to the loose rope for over 90 seconds and tried to climb it up before he lost his strength and plunged to his death. Magistrate Francesco Depasquale opened an investigation, says Net News while the Occupational Health and Safety Authority is also expected to draw a report. MaltaToday reports that the man, residing in Msida, was certified dead on the spot. The man was married to a Maltese woman who have a daughter together, says The Malta Independent.
LovinMalta carries a statement by the Estate Agents Section, representing businesses in the real estate industry, in which it dismisses claims made by the secretary general of the Federation of Estate Agents Simon Debono that 2,000 people are living in garages. EAS says the figures are unsubstantiated and calls on Debono to desist from speaking on behalf of the industry.
Meanwhile, The Times reports that representatives of the gaming industry met parliamentary secretary for Housing Roderick Galdes that the spike in rents is making Malta less competitive. The representatives recommended that rental increases be linked to the salary index.
