International cyber-crime gang which stole millions dismantled

Europol revealed that an international crime gang which used malware to steal $100m from more than 40,000 victims has been dismantled.

It said that the investigation was unprecedented, especially in terms of cross-border co-operation.

In complex police operation which conducted investigations in the US, Bulgaria, Germany, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine and coordinated by Europol.

The GozNym network accessed the computers of more than 41,000 victims, laundering the funds it stole through accounts held by its members in the United States and elsewhere, Europol said.

The operation against it began in November 2016 with a German-led action in Ukraine that dismantled the network’s servers and other infrastructure.

Ten members of the network have been charged in Pittsburgh in the US whilst five Russian nationals remain on the run, including one who developed the GozNym malware.
