In the Times of Malta we read that more than 500 doctors have denounced the consultation over controversial changes to the law regulating in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, saying the debate only served to “com- promise” embryo protection even further. They noted that compared to the original ver- sion, the revised changes to the IVF Bill will provide for an even higher number of embryos that could remain frozen indefinitely.

In the meantime on The Malta Independent we read that a coalition of pro-life groups yesterday presented seven proposals to President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, which the group feels should be considered by members of parliament before the final vote on the Embryo Protection Act tomorrow.

We also read that Opposition leader Adrian Delia received a little help from his in- laws in settling an €80,000 pend- ing tax bill, after they bought out a promise-of-sale agreement he had signed several years ago for an €88,000 property adjacent to his Siġġiewi home (Times). Culture of fear might be a discouraging factor for people to take a journalism career, says the Head of Media faculty at the University of Malta. (Independent).

migrants aquariusMigrants rescued from the Mediterranean and turned away by Italy and Malta have arrived in Spain’s port of Valencia. Three vessels, including the Aquarius, which rescued the 630 migrants last weekend, have now docked in the harbour. Health officials, interpreters and Red Cross workers are on hand to offer support. Spain’s new socialist government has promised free healthcare and says it will investigate each asylum case.”It is our duty to help avoid a humanitarian catastrophe and offer a safe port to these people, to comply with our human rights obligations,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said earlier this week.

La Sicilia Prosecutor CataniaThe prosecutor of Catania Zuccaro “gave his blessing” to the setup of international hotspots and warned that if the “traffic dimensions” of desperate people are conditioned by the answers at the political level: if the measures adopted are not applied, then we risk that the phenomenon will be governed exclusively by criminal organisations.” Carmelo Zuccaro said this while taking part in the second day of the national conference on “The new frontiers of immigration” promoted by the association of magistrates Democratic Area for Justice (Area Dg). In his comments, Zuccaro said that the Italian rescue centre at sea “covers an area that has been extended to 1.5 million square kilometres, due to the disengagement of the Maltese authorities who also should guard a Search and Rescue area of not modest proportion along the route of the central Mediterranean sea. He accused Malta of systematically refusing the use of its ports for the landings.”

Times of IsraelThe Israeli military said Sunday its aircraft had targeted a leading Gazan figure launching incendiary balloons and kites into Israel. The strike appeared to be the latest instance of the army attempting to warn off Gazans launching balloons and kites at Israel, which have led to daily blazes in fields in southern Israel and raised fears of balloon-borne IED attacks.
