Obama calls for rejection of language used by ‘leaders’ that feeds climate of fear and hatred and which normalises racist sentiments

Former US President Barack Obama has called on Americans to reject language from any of their leaders that feeds hatred or normalises racism.

Although he did not mention his successor by name, the former president called on Americans to “soundly reject language coming out of the mouths of any of our leaders that feeds a climate of fear and hatred or normalizes racist sentiments.”

Obama argued that while such language was not new, it has been “at the root of most human tragedy throughout history.” He specifically named slavery, Jim Crow and the Holocaust.
