EU, Mercosur eye early December trade deal – reports

The European Commission and Mercosur countries are targeting the completion of their long-standing trade negotiations at the Latin American bloc’s summit in early December, according to international press reports.

This renewed push comes amid anticipated farmer protests against the deal, set to take place on Wednesday in Brussels and later in France, echoing previous tractor demonstrations that earlier this year pressured leaders to pause the talks.

While the upcoming Group of 20 summit in Rio de Janeiro was initially seen as the ideal platform to finalise the agreement, any announcement there could be overshadowed by Mercosur’s efforts to strengthen ties with China, especially with President Xi Jinping also scheduled to visit Brazil.
