Trump jokes aboout making Canada the ’51st state’ as leader Trudeau faces turmoil

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces a precarious political moment following the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who cited irreconcilable differences over how to address President-elect Donald Trump’s looming tariff threats.

Meanwhile, Trump stirred the conversation further by joking about Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state. Posting on his Truth Social platform, he claimed, “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it’s a great idea. 51st State!!!”

A Leger poll revealed that 13% of Canadians would support such a move. Trump had previously made the same remark during a November dinner at Mar-a-Lago, reportedly to the amusement of his audience.
