The Dallas Opera canceled its big-ticket March 2020 gala concert with the opera star Placido Domingo on Thursday amid new accusations that he had sexually harassed multiple women.
The Dallas company, where the Spanish-born Domingo made his United States debut in 1961 on his way to opera stardom, became the third major American institution to cut ties with him over the recent allegations, joining the Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera.
In light of ongoing developments regarding allegations made against Plácido Domingo, The Dallas Opera has decided to cancel the March 11, 2020 gala, in which he was scheduled to perform. Information on future TDO special events will be announced at a later date.
Domingo is still scheduled to sing later this month at the Metropolitan Opera in New York; the Met has said it was awaiting the outcome of an investigation by the Los Angeles Opera into the allegations against Domingo, the company’s general director.
In the meantime, 11 more women have accused opera legend Domingo of sexual assault — about a month after an explosive report emerged in which several others claimed the married 78-year-old tenor made inappropriate advances toward them.
Among the new accusers is Angela Turner Wilson, who was cast as the second lead in Jules Massenet’s “Le Cid” during the Washington Opera’s 1999-2000 season.
The other 10 women, who have come forward anonymously, allege that Domingo touched them unwantedly, persistently asked for private meetings in person or in late-night phone calls, or that he attempted to kiss them.
