Malta Public Transport announces the launch of a new direct bus service, Route TD5, offering a quicker connection between Malta International Airport (MIA) and Buġibba in both directions, with stops in Luqa, Żebbuġ, Rabat and St Paul’s Bay.
Launching on 27 July, Route TD5 is a commercial Tallinja Direct service introduced beyond the existing concession agreement, and forms part of ongoing efforts to improve connectivity across Malta’s public transport network. Fares for Tallinja Direct services are set at €1.50 for holders of a personalised Tallinja Card, €3.00 per journey when paying with cash, and included in the pre-paid Explore Cards.
Tailored for both tourists and residents, Tallinja Direct routes provide a more convenient public transport option along the island’s busiest travel corridors, by reducing the need for transfers and bypassing major urban centres. The introduction of Route TD5 will help accommodate the growing demand on Route TD1, operating between the airport and Ċirkewwa, therefore increasing capacity along this corridor.
Route TD5 will operate six trips during weekdays and five trips during the weekend offering hourly departures in both directions. The route will be operated using modern urban buses, which are equipped with additional seating space to provide a comfortable travel experience and sufficient space for luggage.
Malta Public Transport is also implementing changes to Route 90 (Valletta–Zabbar) with four extra early-morning trips to better serve commuters. Meanwhile, Route 83 (Valletta–Santa Lucia) will operate as a circular route, improving coverage and efficiency for passengers along this corridor.
