Italy Police Break Up Illegal Streaming Network; Eight Held

Italian police placed eight people under house arrest Friday in a Catania-led investigation into an alleged criminal network accused of running the country’s largest illegal streaming service.

Prosecutors said the group pirated subscription platforms including Sky, DAZN, Mediaset, Amazon Prime and Netflix, generating an estimated 10 million euros in profits and causing more than 30 million euros in damages.

Authorities said the suspects, based in several Italian cities and abroad, controlled about 70% of the nation’s illegal streaming market, reaching more than 900,000 users.

The case follows a 2022 cybercrime sweep known as Operation Gotha and was developed with Italy’s postal and cyber police.
