Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2’ Set to Join Billion-Dollar Box Office Club

Disney Animation’s “Zootopia 2” is on track to surpass $1 billion at the global box office this week, becoming only the second Hollywood film in 2025 to reach the milestone. The film follows detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they navigate the twists and turns of a mysterious reptile who shakes up the mammal metropolis of Zootopia.
Heading into the weekend, “Zootopia 2” had earned $232.7 million domestically, with international markets contributing $753.4 million. Nearly $450 million of that global total comes from China, where the film has performed exceptionally well despite tighter restrictions on U.S. theatrical releases. The movie achieved the highest animated opening for a non-local title in China and broke records for the fastest-grossing non-local animated film in the country within just five days of release.
Jared Bush, chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, said the milestone “means audiences are coming to theaters for a shared experience… a Zootopia dream come true.” The only other film to cross the billion-dollar mark this year is China’s domestic animated hit, “Ne Zha 2,” which has amassed $2.2 billion since January.
The success of “Zootopia 2” also underscores a broader trend in the U.S. theatrical market. PG-rated family films are now outpacing PG-13 and R-rated releases, with PG titles generating $2.7 billion domestically in 2025 so far, compared with $2.5 billion for PG-13 and $2.4 billion for R-rated films. Analysts say this shift reflects the influence of younger audiences, who are drawn to child-friendly films and lower ticket prices, helping family-oriented movies reach record-breaking box-office totals.
As the film nears the billion-dollar milestone, it highlights not only Disney’s continued strength in animation but also the evolving dynamics of the global film market, particularly the growing importance of China and family-friendly content.
