EU Energy Chief Urges Citizens to Work from Home Amid Fuel Crisis

The European Commission has urged citizens to work from home, travel less and accelerate renewable energy rollout, warning that the Gulf conflict could trigger a prolonged energy crisis.

EU energy chief Dan Jørgensen described the situation as “very serious,” cautioning that energy markets are unlikely to return to normal anytime soon. He encouraged measures such as reduced driving, lower speed limits, greater use of public transport, and car sharing, in line with guidance from the International Energy Agency.

While no concrete actions were agreed at the meeting of EU energy ministers, the Commission is expected to propose new measures soon. Longer term, Jørgensen stressed the need to expand renewables and strengthen energy independence.

The warning comes as oil and gas prices have surge, up to 70%, since the conflict began, raising fears of a global crisis potentially worse than the 1970s oil shock.
