Google Cloud customers in Western Europe faced widespread disruption Tuesday, with no estimated time of recovery.
The problems began at 0608 UTC in europe-west2-b, one of three availability zones in Google’s London region, which are meant to protect against hardware or regional failures. Google’s status page said multiple services were experiencing “elevated errors and intermittent network failures.”
Affected services include BigQuery Data Transfer Service, Cloud Filestore, Cloud Run, Google App Engine, Google Cloud NetApp Volumes, Google Kubernetes Engine and Managed Service for Apache Kafka. Google said its engineering team continued to investigate and apologized to those affected.
Downdetector showed customers caught up in the outage included Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Royal Mail, Rightmove, DPD, BT, Cloudflare, Screwfix and Revolut. Revolut said it was experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services and that customers’ money and data were safe.
Technology workers on Reddit said the outage was having a cascading effect on multiple suppliers. One user wrote that a single zone going down takes out any service that is not built for high availability. Another said “loads of stuff seems to be down,” pointing to DNS issues. On X, one customer called it a “major GCP incident affecting Europe regions.”
Google initially said there were no workarounds and planned to update customers around 0930 UTC. At 10:18 UTC, it updated its status page to say Studio was not affected. It advised customers, if feasible, to migrate affected workloads to another available location.
Revolut outage leaves customers unable to pay or access funds
Revolut said Tuesday it was experiencing a service disruption affecting “multiple services” as thousands of customers reported being unable to make payments or access their money.
Users of the British digital bank said the app and card payments were failing, including in physical stores. Others said they could not see recent transactions or reach customer support. Some who tried to make payments or top up accounts saw a message reading: “We’re sorry, something has gone wrong. Please try later.”
Downdetector, which tracks online outages, logged more than 1,500 user reports of problems with Revolut shortly after 8 a.m. BST.
“We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services,” a Revolut spokesperson told the BBC, adding that “all our customers’ money and data are safe.” In a statement on X, the company said its engineering team was “actively working to restore full service as quickly as possible.” It apologized for any inconvenience.
Revolut did not say which countries were affected. Social media posts suggested customers in the U.K., France, Spain, Ireland, Germany and Italy were among those hit, and users in Malta also reported problems. It was unclear whether every customer was affected.
Reports differed on the company’s online status page. The BBC said it showed a range of services, including card payments, transfers, ATM withdrawals and customer support, as “partially unavailable.” Other outlets said the page listed all systems as “operational” at the time of their reports.
Many users criticized the company on social media, saying the outage left them unable to pay or contact support.
Revolut began as an app that let customers make payments abroad without the high fees charged by traditional banks. It has since expanded into broader financial services and operates as a bank in more than 30 countries. The company says it has more than 80 million personal customers and more than 800,000 business customers worldwide. It reported revenue of £4.52 billion and profit of £1.3 billion last year.
